"Last year in Vancouver, I sang Sweet Caroline with a bunch of total strangers and it turned into one of the best nights of my life. Three rounds of poutine later we were all best friends. That's the magic of karaoke in this country."

— Mike · 20 years on the mic

How to Not Embarrass Yourself
(Or Do—We Support That Too)

Twenty years of karaoke taught me a few things. Here's advice that actually makes a difference.

01
Pick Your Lane Early

Know your range. Choosing Bohemian Rhapsody and dying on the high notes in front of 40 strangers is a specific kind of nightmare. Pick something you've sung in the shower and actually sounded decent.

02
Energy Over Accuracy

The crowd doesn't care if you're pitchy. They care if you're committed. Don't stand like a frozen Timbit.

03
Start Strong, End Strong

Nobody remembers the middle. Nail the first line and the last line — you're a legend.

04
Don't Stare at the Screen

Look at the crowd at least once. Even a quick glance makes you look confident.

05
If You Mess Up — Laugh

Canadians love self-awareness. If you laugh it off, the crowd will cheer you on.

06
Don't Hog the Mic

If there's a lineup — one song per person. It's karaoke, not your personal concert, kurwa.

"I picked Creep, committed to every word, forgot the bridge halfway through, and the crowd carried me to the end. Three strangers bought me a beer afterward. That's karaoke. That's why we do it."
